DEF and Emissions Faults: Derates and What Causes Them
A DEF or aftertreatment fault can put a truck into derate and stop it. Here is what triggers them and what a driver can actually check.
Modern emissions systems will stop a truck. Not gradually — a derate steps power down on a schedule, and if the fault is not addressed it steps down again until the truck is barely moving.
Knowing what triggers that and what is worth checking on the shoulder is the difference between a delay and a tow.
How derates generally work
When the system detects a fault it warns first, then reduces power, and continues stepping down if the condition persists. The specific behavior varies by manufacturer and by fault, and the pattern is consistent — warnings escalate.
Which means a warning light acted on early is a very different situation from one ignored for two days.
DEF quality and level
Running the DEF tank low or empty triggers a derate. So does DEF that is contaminated or out of spec, because the system tests quality and will fault on bad fluid.
- DEF level, which is the first thing to check and is genuinely often the answer
- Whether anything other than DEF was ever put in that tank
- DEF that has been sitting in heat for a long time, because it degrades
- Crystallization around the injector or the cap, which is a sign of a leak or a problem
- The DEF quality sensor itself, which fails
Panhandle heat matters here. DEF degrades faster stored hot, and a truck that sits with a partial tank through a Florida summer can have fluid that will not pass the quality check.
Never put anything else in the DEF tank
Diesel in a DEF tank, or water, or anything else, contaminates the whole system and it is an expensive repair. It happens because the fills are close together and somebody is in a hurry.
If it happens, do not run the engine. Running it circulates the contamination through the injector and the catalyst.
Regeneration problems
The DPF collects soot and burns it off during regeneration. Regens fail or get interrupted, soot loads up, and the system faults.
Common causes are a truck that idles more than it drives, short runs that never get hot enough for a passive regen, a driver cancelling parked regens because there is never a convenient time, and sensor faults.
A truck used in a way that prevents regeneration will keep faulting until either the duty cycle changes or somebody addresses the accumulated soot.
If the truck is asking for a parked regen, let it do it. Cancelling regens repeatedly is how a soot load becomes a plugged filter, and a plugged filter is a considerably bigger repair than an hour of parking.
Sensors and wiring
Aftertreatment systems run a lot of sensors — temperature, pressure differential, NOx sensors, level and quality sensors. Any of them can fail or lose a connection, and the fault code points at the circuit rather than naming the failed part.
Wiring and connectors in this area take heat and vibration, and in coastal air they corrode. A fault that comes and goes is frequently a connection rather than a sensor.
What a driver can usefully check
- Read and write down the actual fault codes rather than describing the light
- Check DEF level and look for crystallization around fittings
- Note whether the truck has been idling more than driving lately
- Note whether regens have been cancelled
- Look for obvious exhaust leaks or damaged wiring in the aftertreatment area
- Note how far into a derate you are, because that determines urgency
What needs equipment
Forced regens, sensor diagnosis, clearing faults properly and anything involving the DPF or SCR components need a scan tool and somebody who knows the system. Clearing a code without addressing the cause just restarts the clock.
Idle time is the underlying cause
A truck that idles far more than it drives never gets the exhaust temperatures a passive regen needs, so soot accumulates and the system has to force regens more often. Do that long enough and the filter loads faster than regens can clear it.
In a panhandle summer, idling for air conditioning is not optional for a driver in a sleeper. It does mean the aftertreatment is working against the duty cycle, and it explains why some trucks fault repeatedly while identical trucks do not.
Do not just clear the code
Clearing a fault without addressing what caused it resets the warning and changes nothing. The derate comes back, usually further into the trip and further from help.
The useful thing is reading the code, understanding what it points at, and fixing that.
